From the Field: Don Root — Tularosa Basin (N.M.) Chapter Maj. Jack Moffat, USAF-Ret., presi- dent of the Don Root — Tularosa Basin Chapter, presented a check for $1,000 to members of the Steel Talons Honor Guard stationed at Holloman AFB, N.M. The chapter, which has 49 members, has pro- vided financial support to the honor guard for more than eight years. The money raised goes to help defray out-of-pocket expenses in- curred by members, whose respon- sibilities range from posting the

colors to providing military honors at servicemembers’ funerals. Chapter members also long have supported the annual U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots pro- gram and will sponsor the annual Veterans Day parade this year in Alamogordo, N.M.

Mid-Florida Gulf Coast Chapter Community service is a priority for the Mid-Florida Gulf Coast Chapter, whose 100-plus members performed 4,353 hours of volunteer work last year. Members, who report the num- ber of volunteer hours they work at monthly meetings, donate time to organizations ranging from area churches to the Salvation Army to local libraries. Several members also donate blood to area blood banks. “As retired officers, we’ve been blessed and want to share our skills and talents wherever

we see a need,” says president Lt. Cmdr. Mike Piedmont, USN-Ret.

Seven Springs (Ark.) Chapter Members of the Seven Springs Chap- ter presented $500 scholarships to two area veterans, Cheyne Newberry and Christopher Gracey, who are stu- dents at Arkansas State University- Beebe. Donations from the chapter’s 36 members fund the scholarships, which may be awarded to veterans, veterans’ spouses, or students who have ties to the military. “We’ve found some really good candidates the past few years who are good people, good students, have good military records, and can use the financial help,” says Lt. Col. James Jacobsen, USMC-Ret., Seven Springs chapter president.
