Troops Assist in Japanese Relief

T

hroughout March, American servicemembers continued to provide assistance to people in

northeastern Japan after a magnitude 9.0 earthquake and subsequent tsunami dev- astated the area March 11. Thousands of U.S. Marines and sailors worked to deliver relief supplies and provide medical assis- tance, transportation, and engineering as- sets as part of Operation Tomodachi. Approximately 440,000 people lived

in the aff ected area, where roads re- mained mostly unusable, power and water systems were down, and tempera- tures dipped below freezing.

shown just wonderful resilience and for- titude under the worst circumstances,” Willard said. “I know I speak for every American and every military member that we are very, very sorry for this great disas- ter that they’ve been subjected to.” — Mark Elrod
