Spouse Spotlight K

im Shanahan launched her company Book Bouquet in 1999, and she tailored the busi- ness to complement her lifestyle as a

mother of three and an Army spouse. More than a decade later, www.bookbouquet .com still is sending baskets of books, gourmet food, and gift items to loved ones across the country (and to service- members overseas). Where did you get the idea? I had a friend who was un- dergoing cancer treat- ment, and I wanted to send her something. If you’ve ever shopped with a 2-year-old, you know that’s not fun. Stand- ing in line, [I thought], I wish there was an 800-number for this.

Did the military lifestyle influence your business plans? When I started this, the Internet was just ... start- ing as far as people ordering online. My husband [Maj. Adrian Shanahan] said, “Hey, you can do that on the Internet. When we move it doesn’t matter. You can take it wherever you go.” I’ve been able to move … and not stop business. What are your future plans? I’d love to ide- ally have three warehouses … near large military instillations and be able to employ military spouses. It’s really hard on mili- tary spouses to find employment. They would appreciate having a job and an understanding atmo- sphere. ... When they move, it’s not going to be a big thing. When your husband was deployed to Afghanistan, did you send him a Book Bouquet? I sent him all kinds of stuff ... Book Bou- quets ... lots of family vid- eos, lots of things to do. What’s your favorite book? My very favor- ite book that I read over and over again is Pride and Prejudice.
