While Tuscaloosa is most known for the University of Alabama and legendary coach Paul “Bear” Bryant, the southern city also has hosted a number of USA Triathlon national championships in recent years. The USA Triathlon Collegiate National Championship returns to Tuscaloosa, so let “On the Road” be your guide to this quintessential college town.

Best places to swim/bike/run
There is no better way to tour a college campus than to go on a late night run. The University of Alabama is a beautiful campus with a myriad of southern styled buildings and athletic complexes that hold historical significance in nearly every NCAA sport. … The campus is a great place to train, as it is pedestrian (and cyclist) friendly with the property backing into the Black Warrior River. Jack Warner Parkway is on the backside of campus with plenty of parking. The paths are often shaded by the trees and well maintained. … UA’s student recreation center offers several pools to ensure you get some pool time. … Lake Lurleen State Park is 9 miles northwest of Tuscaloosa and offers miles of scenic trails and paths for running and cycling.

Newk’s Café located on UA’s campus offers everything from California-style pizza to oven-baked sandwiches and fresh salads and desserts. … Chuck’s Fish is a great place to relax after a long workout and enjoy fresh seafood from the Gulf. The hand-rolled sushi is fantastic, plus Tuesday is half off wine and sushi for the ladies. … City Café in Northport has the best Southern cooking in Tuscaloosa. For just a few dollars you get a plate full of food and some homemade dessert. … Waysider has the best breakfast in Tuscaloosa and Northport, hands down. Get there early to avoid the wait! … “I, perhaps more than anyone in the sport, believe that the only true way to fuel up is to frequent the host of ice cream shops that pepper the town. For those of you looking for a good excuse to consume a few calories during your trip, consider this the reward for a job well done on race day,” Tim Yount, USA Triathlon chief operating officer. … Mellow Mushroom’s pizza and Mugshots’ burgers are two of the top places in town.
