River Signals

Chasing elephants in V5 I4 Scott, a few years ago I wrote to complain about the spelling and grammar, and to encour- age you to capture the soul of paddling. Damn, if I'd known that you were an engineering dropout I would have been a little easier on you on the English language thing. I stopped looking for spelling mistakes a few issues back, but haven't seen any regardless. Second, after reading your latest issue, I've got to say that without question you are captur- ing the soul of what we do. I was killing myself on

your write-up of the Waldies, I loved the paddling bars feature, the boat comparison by pros was a great idea, and the girl in the Old Town ad on page 17 looks like my girlfriend, who also hap- pens to look super in a PFD and a rash guard. Jeff Calvert

Vancouver, BC I was very impressed by your last "Off the

Tongue" editorial about chasing your dreams. Like you, I did what I was told was sensible and became an engineer. I truly enjoyed it, for a while. Now, being a new mom and seeing life

with a whole new perspective, my old dream of becoming a writer starts to come back. I know there will be difficulties, nasty holes, trashy waves, big drops and maybe even portages, but when it comes to following your heart, as in river running, the journey is more important than the destination. Thanks to you, I am a few paddle strokes closer to my goal. Continue your amazing work.

Because you are following your dreams and chasing elephants we are getting a great maga- zine. I received a subscription last Christmas and it's very refreshing to see a Canadian publi- cation of this quality. The blend of Canadian paddling information along with covering the world is excellent. Keep up the great work!

"Steep Creeking in Northern B.C." (Rapid V5 I4). I was born and raised in Terrace. I left when I was 12, though, and this was the first I have heard of people kayaking the rivers and creeks around town.

Reading the names (Williams,

Kalum, etc.) brought back a flood (pardon the pun) of memories for me. It's good to see pad- dlers taking advantage of the liquid riches of the area and I wish the Spencers success in their outdoor business there. Thanks for bringing a way-out-of-the-way place to light and for taking me home again.
