Raft Slambezi by Stever Fisher Steve Fisher, co-producer of Wicked
Liquid I and II, and Dale Jardine compile the highlights of five seasons of massive raft flips and hits on the mighty Zambezi River. Throw in some BIG water “safety” boating and you have 40 minutes of mon-
strous volume, boils, reactionaries, pil- lows, holes and waves manhandling rafts and launching kayaks in ways you’ve never seen before in other paddling videos. The filmmakers claim “nobody died during the making of this film,” but after seeing, rapid-by-rapid, rafters hit,
flip, down- time and swim—you gotta won- der. The video- boater
commentary is amusing, the carnage is unparalleled, and where the rafts flip the kayaks rip! Even though I did get a little desensitized to the raft trashing, it never looked like the Ottawa, and I’d still recommend this video to anyone who thinks rafting has to be lame. $25 US. Basics is a 50-minute, move-by-move, technical instruction DVD that takes the viewer through EJ’s tips for doing every- thing from lean cleans and front surfs to blunts, loops and kickflips. The format of the DVD, the inspiring demos and some quality tips—I especially like the segments on the lean clean, roundhouse, clean spin and control in a hole—make this a worth- while purchase. Some of EJ’s explanations are a bit too cursory—there were moments when I listened and saw but did not gain a greater understanding—but overall this DVD can be continually utilized to aid your paddling.
Advanced is another 50 minutes of footage that takes us from where EJ left off in Basics, with a few repeat moves but a lot of new ones too. EJ introduces us to confusing new moves like the lunar orbit and the McNasty, with some guest boaters
