offering decent explanations on complicat- ed moves like the helix and tricky whu. The entry move section offers some inter- esting tips on a rarely examined subject. My big question is why is there footage of an African woman falling while carrying a load on her head? I did find EJ’s shirtless stretches pretty amusing. Emerick’s influence has helped EJ pro- duce his best instructional films yet. The crisp filming, good use of music, and visu- al matching of the moves with the narrated explanation are all reminiscent of Emerick’s work with Ken Whiting in Playdaze etc. Both DVDs are filmed in beautiful settings on the Nile and Zambezi rivers. $29.95 US each or $54.95 US for both from www.jacksonkayak.com or

Raging River, by Pam Withers

This white- water novel kicks off a series of high- octane adven- ture stories for young readers by B.C. author Pam Withers. I don’t fit the book’s 10–16- year-old recom- mended age range, but nei-

ther do all the adults who read Harry Potter.

I got sucked in by the tale of Jake and

Peter, teenaged slalom kayakers who train on the Chilliwack and get thrown together on a raft trip down a fictionalized northern B.C. river. Everything goes wrong, from bad swims to an improbable life-threaten- ing heron attack, and the boys end up paddling for their lives down a 95-mile class-V canyon. It’s cliffhanger material that has the potential to be cheesy but Withers, an experienced paddler herself, pulls it off nicely. I highly recommend Raging River to the younger generation to cure their musty obsession with magic spells and potions. Much better than the classic books I grew up reading about hunters and trappers and their faithful varmint-tracking coon

dogs, here is some juvenile fiction that represents up-to-date modes of outdoor experience. And unlike quidditch, kayak- ing is something kids can actually do. This book will get them in boats, which is a whole lot safer than jumping off the bal- cony with a broomstick.

Withers plans to continue the West Coast-themed series, sending Jake and the boys out heli-snowboarding and down- hill mountain biking—see www.takeittothe- extreme.com for teasers. $8.95 Cdn, $6.95 US from www.whitecap.ca.—TS
