River Shorties LEARN TO KAYAK ON THE OTTAWA RIVER
Reversing Falls in the spotlight It’s good to see Eastern Canada claiming its 15 minutes’ worth. This summer, pro paddlers converged on Reversing Falls in Saint John, New Brunswick. In July, it was Epicocity Productions filming the impressive tidal rapids for the upcoming Better than Rodeo with Karl Moser, Chris Todd, Dustin Urban, Karyn Roy and friends. Scott Lindgren showed up in September to shoot a segment for Burning Time. Donkey flipping and helixing for the tourists were Ken Whiting, Jay Kincaid, Tyler Curtis, Brendan Mark, Ruth Gordon and the Arnaud brothers from France. And—crank up the circus tunes—the European Fear Factor also came to town for some stunts on the nearby railway bridge. Putting reality show contestants in kayaks was deemed to be a little too scary.—Jamie Chapman

N.A. Squirt Boating Championship launched
The North American Squirt Boating Association (NASBA) hosted its first annual championship event, July 25–26 on the Ottawa River. NASBA said the event drew “a small but strong field of five competitors” to battle it out for the $500 purse. Congratulations to Noah Frasier for taking first place, Dustin Urban for earning second place and Brendan Mark for third. The event will return in 2004.
Insurance crisis averted Guiding companies can stop worrying that new insurance requirements will put them out of business. In September, Transport Canada responded to industry requests and exempted “pleasure craft” from a part of the Marine Liability Act (MLA) which would have required operators of kayaks, canoes and rafts to carry liability coverage equivalent to that of large commer- cial vessels (see Dam News: “Insurance Crisis Looms,” Rapid online V5 I3). However, the industry is
still lobbying to be exempt completely from the MLA, which prevents use of the liability waiver as a defense against lawsuits.
No more Dagger canoes; Bell to make Ocoee
Dagger announced in 2003 that it would get out of the canoe market to focus solely on kayak production. Popular Dagger designs such as the Rival and Caption will be no more, but the best-selling Ocoee lives on. Bell Canoe Works has taken over the mould and will begin delivering Ocoees this spring. Bell also now provides the customer support and warranty service for existing Dagger canoes.
Rapid photographer wins award, crushes ants
Fujifilm Canada Inc. awarded regular Rapid con- tributor Rick Matthews for Outstanding Achievement— Commercial Category, in the Fujifilm 2002 Professional Photography Challenge. Matthews grate- fully received “a cute little glass trophy,” which, he said, is “very handy for crushing these ants that I keep getting in the office but tends to smudge easily.” Congratulations Rick.
