A Slice of New York A

cross America, pizza is a comfort food. In New York City, it’s a culture unto itself. In the past fi ve years, Big Apple pizza tours steadily have

grown in popularity, and many tourists are putting Broad- way on hold to grab a few slices of the city’s prized pies. While pizza can be dated back as far as A.D. 79 in the

preserved ashes of Pompeii, American love for the pies spread in the mid-1940s when American GIs stationed in Italy brought home a craving. The Italian neighborhoods of New York helped cultivate that taste and remain cen- tral to the U.S. pizza story. Since 2005, Tony Muia, owner of A Slice of Brooklyn

Bus Tours, has taken nearly 10,000 tourists a year through his native borough to educate them about the history and state of the pizza scene. “If you were to make a list of the 10 best pizzerias in New York, at least seven are [in Brook- lyn],” he explains. On his tours, guests typically visit two iconic pizzerias — Grimaldi’s and Spumoni Gardens. If you want to branch out into all fi ve boroughs, pizza enthusiast Scott Weiner, owner of Scott’s Pizza Tours,

has been giving pizza lovers a lift around the city since 2008. Scott’s Tours, with more than 3,500 participants a year, rotates a growing number of pizzerias on the sched- ule, and guests visit about three or four pizzerias. “I like to choose places that have a lot of history to them but show a great cross-section of pizza,” Weiner says. “Everyone gets hungry after the fi rst bite, but I en- courage guests to just have one slice at a time, because there’s always plenty.” Several pizza tour companies off er military discounts

and private group tours. Muia, for example, has given multiple private tours to groups from nearby Army bases. “They cut through the red tape and really embraced the tour,” he says.
