Help Avoid ‘Settling’ On
Your Home Recovery Care... And Worrying About Unexpected Bills W
hen you turned 65, you may have thought your healthcare worries were over. After all, Medicare paired with TRICARE For Life (TFL) delivers comprehensive medical benefits for military retirees. But a little-known “road bump” is delivering unexpected bills to some military retirees … just when they least expected it. What’s the issue? Home healthcare or personal care bills. In today’s medical system, patients are leaving the Hospital more quickly than ever. Cardiac patients may be released from the Hospital within days. Surgery patients often stay only overnight. Patients with broken bones or serious injuries usually stay in the Hospital for just a few short days. Then they’re sent home … with doctors’ orders for physical therapy, nurse visits or rehabilitation at home. But here’s where the unexpected bills may arrive: If the physical therapist recommends more visits than Medicare or TRICARE allow, you could be responsible for paying for these additional therapy sessions. That means just because home health care is “approved” by Medicare or TRICARE, all your expenses may not be covered. Plus, you may also need personal care such as help with bathing, dressing, housework, shopping or cooking. That’s the reason MOAA set up the Short Term Recovery Insurance Plan (Recovery Plan) for members and their spouses age 65 and older.
CASH BENEFITS TO HELP PAY FOR YOUR CARE
The MOAA Recovery Plan can help you move forward with the home health care your doctor prescribes:
r From the highly recommended therapists and nurses your doctor recommends.
SITUATION ALERT FOR MILITARY RETIREES:
Many people assume Medicare and TRICARE For Life (TFL) automatically cover 100% of home recovery bills. But that’s not always true. Medicare and TFL limit the amount paid for therapies and then cap the number of visits or therapy sessions allowed.
What if you need more? You either pay for it yourself or you go without.
But as an MOAA member, you can stay more in control of your healthcare decisions … and have additional money to help pay unexpected medical bills … with MOAA’s Recovery Plan.
