Making microgeneration certification easy

Think accreditation for installing renewable technologies is difficult to obtain? Think again. The ECA has developed a one-day course, MCS Made Easy, aimed at helping you understand the requirements and becoming accredited. Iain Macdonald, ECA’s head of Education and Training, explains how the course can benefit your business

ith the UK committed to its target of sourcing 15 per cent of energy from renewable resources by 2020, which equates to a seven-fold increase in UK

renewable energy consumption compared with 2008 levels, there is a big challenge ahead for government and industry alike. But meeting these targets is not just about saving energy resources and preventing climate change. The Department for Energy and Climate Change (DECC) estimates that achieving our targets could provide £100 billion worth of investment opportunities and up to half a million jobs in the renewable energy sector by 2020. This provides plenty of opportunity for electrical contractors to get involved in what is expected to be a massive growth industry. To regulate the supply and installation of renewable

technologies and protect the consumer, the government introduced the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS). The MCS certifies that microgeneration technologies are installed professionally, accurately and to a high standard. MCS is the only scheme to cover all microgeneration products and services, and it assures both the quality of the systems being installed and the competence of those installing them. To make the most of the opportunities presented by renewable technologies, installers are strongly advised to register with one of the MCS certification bodies, such as that offered by ECA through ELECSA. This might seem like an additional barrier, particularly when you already have many accreditation visits each year and just want to get on with the job. But there are many benefits to joining the MCS and, thankfully, becoming accredited is not as difficult as you might think. In fact, most companies are
