(Scotland) Bill, calling for landlords to state in the Tenant Information Pack if RCD protection is installed. As well as increasing the focus on landlords’ responsibilities for electrical safety, we hope this will raise tenants’ awareness of the need for RCD protection. At Westminster, the focus is on gaining government support to raise awareness of the benefits of RCD protection. An Early Day Motion, developed in support of the Plug into Safety campaign, has attracted signatures from across the political spectrum.
Support Industry support, however, is essential to the success of our Plug into Safety campaign. Manufacturers, wholesalers, retailers and individual contractors all have a vital role to play in the campaign. We have, for example, developed an electrician’s ‘toolkit’ designed to help contractors communicate the benefits of RCD protection to their customers. Available from leading wholesalers, including Rexel, Wilts, Screwfix/ Electricfix and TLC, they can be found in more than 200 outlets throughout the UK. Each toolkit contains ESC leaflets which, in addition to basic safety messages, will explain the importance of RCDs. Detachable, blank business cards, which urge home owners to install RCD protection, are also included for electricians to leave with customers after a house call. To complement this activity, partnerships with
manufacturers of electrical products and retailers – including B&Q, Focus DIY, Makita and Gardenoasis – mean we have also been able to provide RCD information on product packaging and in-store displays. Consumer advice is now available in more than 900 locations throughout the UK and more than 1.5 million leaflets have been distributed. Further partnership development will take place in the coming year, and we have been investigating the best way to reach vulnerable people and those more at risk by liaising with Fire and Rescue Services, the Department for Communities and local government and various consumer safety bodies. The UK’s electrical installations and products have a strong
safety record but we want to make it even better. With the development of key strategic partnerships, and support from the industry, we can do just that.
WHY TAKE RISKS WITH YOUR REPUTATION?
Approximately 4,000 domestic fires each year might have been prevented if RCD protection had been fitted in the consumer unit
