Spotlight on: Northern Ireland region

League football matches. Such applications proved a challenge for the ECA technical assessment team, as these companies’ work cannot be interrupted – being predominantly temporary installations for live TV productions. Fortunately, our assessors were up to the challenge. While there is plenty of work within the capital, Greater London region members have had to be resilient, due to competition from across the UK and Europe. This has driven down profit margins, which in turn has had a knock-on effect on companies’ investment in training and apprentice employment. London is currently seeing the lowest level of apprentice recruitment that it has for many years. The Greater London team works closely with JTL, SummitSkills, our Sector Skills Council, Unite the Union and the JIB.

Future The Greater London region team continues to play an active role alongside the Olympic Delivery Authority, London Development Agency and SummitSkills. Together, they are managing a special training initiative. This is open to all electrical contracting businesses in the London area. It aims to help local electrical companies benefit from potential opportunities arising from the 2012 Olympic Games and beyond.

Some Greater London region members are playing key roles on the Olympic Park in preparation for 2012 Games, and will also be competing for the work that is going to be involved with the Olympic

legacy. By developing the Olympic Park to become, in time, a new and prosperous metropolitan area, it is hoped that a lasting legacy will be created. The region’s members will be looking for a slice of this action. Without doubt, there are exciting times ahead, with a great deal of member interest and opportunities in new technologies such as smart homes, solar and photovoltaic’s and wind power. Much interest has been generated by the recent ECA/ ELECSA Renewables Roadshows, which have taken place throughout the region.

The Greater London region team continues to work alongside environmental colleagues on the FLASH programme, which is part- funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and aims to help London-based small and medium enterprises (SMEs) working in construction.
