ECA News Online access to BSI Standards

FROM 4 APRIL 2011, ECA registered members will have the opportunity to access an online library of up to 70 specially selected British Standards.

Hard copies of British Standards can cost anywhere between £50 and £350 each to purchase. Under the agreement with the British Standards Institution (BSI), registered members can elect to pay an annual subscription of £90 plus VAT or £150 plus VAT (depending on the

number of users) to gain access to the online standards, representing a significant cost saving. Subscription to the online Standards will enable registered members to save copies of the standards to their local PCs, where they will be available to view (but not print) at any time. Up to 10 employees can be registered for access to the library, per subscription. To subscribe to the online library via the ECA website, you will need

to have an active web account. If you would like to apply for a web account or would like to confirm your login details, please send an email to marketing@eca.co.uk n More details will be available when the new service goes live on 4 April 2011. If you have any queries in the meantime, please contact the head of the technical team, Giuliano Digilio, on 020 7313 4825 or by emailing giuliano.digilio@eca.co.uk

ECA AT SSIP CONFERENCE

PAUL REEVE, THE ECA’S HEAD OF Health and Safety and Environment, is chairing this years’ Safety Schemes in Procurement (SSIP) Conference, which is being held on 5 April 2011 at the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills Conference Centre, London. Reeve is a member of the SSIP management board, representing SEC group, and ECA is an affiliate member of the SSIP in its own right. The ECA plays a key role within SSIP to help ensure that SSIP’s main priority is to continually reduce

the problem of excessive health and safety pre-qualification, and that the cost benefits of SSIP are not only there, but explained clearly to buyers and suppliers. The ECA has also been active in ensuring that the health and safety aspects of PAS 91 are properly aligned with SSIP members’ own safety questionnaires. The conference will include a selection of guest speakers, including Paul Morrell, the government’s chief construction adviser and other industry figures. n Visit www.ssip.org.uk for details.

Energy saving checklists

A Commercial Energy Saving and Carbon Reduction Checklist is now available in two versions for both registered members and clients to help both parties discuss the scope for further energy saving measures. Aimed mainly at smaller- to medium-sized ECA member companies, the checklists provide a useful guide, with the emphasis in the members’ checklist on measures that can be applied in existing (often small to medium sized) commercial or public premises, including those that require extension or major refurbishment. In addition to installation, these measures may also include also design, commissioning and maintenance. n Both documents are available from the ECA and can be downloaded from the website at www.eca.co.uk

The ECA’s Golden Decade of Sport initiative continues to support sports clubs and individual sports people across the country. Here, Derbyshire Disabled Cricket Club players receive sponsored equipment from Derbyshire and Burton upon Trent branch Chairman Nigel Bonner at the Gateway indoor cricket centre in Derby.
