he electric vehicle (EV) industry has witnessed a flurry of activity so far this year. First, the government announced a new scheme where it offers individual grants of £5,000 to purchase
an EV, and this was closely followed by news that there will soon be a nationwide network of EV charging points, with London set to have more electric charging points than petrol stations by 2014.
Spark of life 2011 is set to be the year of the EV in the UK, with more cars available to buy and lease and more places to charge them up. The latest EVs are intended for short journeys, and with the majority of people driving less than 100 miles a day, there are many who may be tempted to purchase one. While Newcastle and Milton Keynes have led the
way in introducing electric charging points, news that London will have 1,300 of them by 2014 has grabbed the headlines. Within Greater London there are currently around
17,000 hybrid and pure EVs registered with the DVLA, and the Source London network of charging points will be a key part of Transport for London’s (TfL) drive to make the city the EV capital of Europe. Londoners will begin to see Source London points strategically located across the city as TfL and its partners begin to install the new network.
