High chip inventories could translate into oversupply

Global inventories held by semiconductor suppliers climbed to their highest level in two- and-a-half years in the fourth quarter of 2010, which could result in an oversupply scenario if growth slows in 2011, reportedmarket research firmIHS iSuppli in El Segundo, Calif. Semiconductor suppliers had 83.6 days of

inventory (DOI) at the end of the fourth quarter of 2010, up 5.5 days, or 7 percent, from78.1 days in the previous quarter, according to IHS iSuppli's inventory report. Inventorywas at its highest level since the second quarter of 2008 at the start of the last semiconductor downturn when DOI reached 84 days. "Inventory levels arguably noware high by

any standard, illustrating the difficulty of controlling chip stockpiles evenwith semiconductor suppliers' arduous efforts to keep themin check," stated Sharon Stiefel, analyst, semiconductormarket intelligence, at IHS. "The sharp increase of semiconductor inventory during the fourth quarter defied expectations of a decline for the period. This inflated level of inventory could become a concern if semiconductor industry growth falls

Amphenol is second source for Radiall R2CT connection kit

Amphenol Corp. is nowa licensed second source for the R2CT connection kit from RadiallUSA Inc. As a second source, Amphenol willmanufacture andmarket the connectors.

The R2CT connection kit provides a

waterproof, sealed connection for fiber-to- the-antenna (FTTA), remote radio head equipment, and similar outdoor applications where a protected interface is needed. The field-installable kit is designed for optical systems using SFP transceivers and duplex LC-terminated fiber-optic cable, but can also be used with copper systems.

The kit can be reused, allowing cables

and transceivers to be changed in the field, including front-panel swapping of transceivers. The kits can also be assembled over existing cables.

short of expectations in 2011," she added. Stiefel noted that as long as IHS iSuppli's

current semiconductor forecast holds -- revenue growth of 5.6 percent in 2011 -- the current inventory level should bemanageable. If growth is lower, the high inventories could

cause oversupply in themarket, resulting in faster price declines and amplifying the size and duration of a downturn or slowdown in the semiconductormarket, she added. The good news is that smart phones and

media tablets continue to generate strong semiconductor growth, alongwith several other segments including automotive and industrialmarkets.

Arrow provides programming services for Linear Tech

Arrow Electronics, Inc. is now qualified to provide programming services for Linear Technology Corp.'s digital power system management products via its global programming services support network. Linear Technology conducted a quality audit and documentation review to ensure Arrow met Linear's stringent quality and control standards.

Arrowis the first service provider

authorized by Linear to programits LTC2978 Octal Digital PowerManagerwith EEPROM, aimed at applications including networking, telecommunications, medical and automotive.

The LTC2978,which incorporates an array

of supervising, margining and sequencing functions, is an all-in-one digital power system management solution that is said to simplify design challenges and reduce the component count typical of traditional analog control.
