Mobile DRAMshipments are projected to

reach 2.9 billion gigabits (Gbits) in 2011, up from1.7 billion Gbits in 2010, thanks to demand for smart phones and tablets, according to IHS iSuppli. Themarket research firmforecasts growth to continue over the next several years, with shipments reaching 20.5 billion Gbits in 2015, up by a factor of 12 fromthe total in 2010.

"As thesemobile devices handlemore

data-intensive applications, demand is expected to escalate formobile DRAM," statedMike Howard, IHS iSuppli's principal

Kemet Corp. (Greenville, S.C.) has announced that its T493 Series of surface- mount tantalumcapacitors has been qualified by the Defense Supply Center, Columbus (DSCC) for defense and aerospace applications. Approval of the T493 Series extends the company's leadership position for COTS type CWR11 capacitors with the largest capacitance- voltage (CV) and equivalent series resistance (ESR) options, said Kemet.

The T493 Series capacitorsmeet the

requirements, specifications and standards outlined in DSCC Drawing 07016, complementing Kemet's DSCC Drawing 95158 productswith additional part type and ESR offerings. DSCC qualification applies to the T493Military/Aerospace COTSMnO2 Series.

The T493 Series is designed for the high-

reliability requirements of critical decoupling and filtering applications. This series offers a variety of lead-frame plating,Weibull grading, and surge current testing options. Standard, low, and ultra- low ESR options are available.

analyst for DRAMandmemory. IHS predicts that smart phones in 2014 will consume 36 timesmore DRAMthan they did in 2009 and tablets will consume 3.5 billion Gbits by 2014, up from35million Gbits in 2010.

A recent IHS iSuppli brief, "The Impending

Commoditization ofMobile DRAM," reveals that this strong demand is likely to lead to commoditization and a gradual decline in margins. In general, mobile DRAMis produced based on known demand levels, and pricing ismostly driven by cost reductions not by the wild fluctuations of supply and demandmore typical of commodity DRAM, explained IHS iSuppi.

However, the landscape is changing. Nearly

all DRAMmakers have introducedmobile DRAMproducts and as competition grows the practice of producingmobile DRAM based on known demand will change, according to IHS iSuppli.

IHS iSuppli also expects third parties like

Kingston Technology Corp. to focus on just a few product configurations at very competitive pricing, leading a shift away from customization toward lower-priced standardized products.

Intel to build $5B chip factory in Arizona

Intel Corp. plans to investmore than $5 billion to build a new chipmanufacturing facility at its site in Chandler, Ariz. The factory, designated Fab 42, will be themost advanced, high-volume semiconductor manufacturing facility in the world, said Intel.

Fab 42 will be built as a 300mmfactory.

Construction is expected to begin in the middle of this year and be completed in 2013. Intel President and CEO Paul Otellini made the announcement during a visit by President Barack Obama at an Intel facility in Hillsboro, Oregon, in February.

Intel said building the newfab on the

leading-edge 14-nanometer processwill enable the chipmaker tomanufacturemore powerful and efficient computer chips. "The investment positions ourmanufacturing network for future growth," stated Brian Krzanich, Intel's senior vice president and generalmanager, Manufacturing and Supply Chain.

While more than 75 percent of Intel's

sales come from outside of the United States, Intel manufactures 75 percent of its microprocessors in the United States. The new fab is expected to increase the company's American manufacturing capability significantly.
