OmniVision debuts first OmniBSI-2 image sensor

OmniVision Technologies, Inc. has unveiled its first image sensor to use its second generation OmniBSI-2 pixel architecture. The 8-megapixel OV8830 image sensor delivers lowpower consumption, advanced image processing features and a small die size for next- generation smart phones. TheOV8830 supports enhanced, fast frame rate image capture and 1080p or 720p high-definition (HD) video recording.

OmniBSI-2 technology isOmniVision's first pixel architecture built on 300-mmwafers using a copper processwith 65 nm

design rules, developed in cooperationwith strategicmanufacturing partner Taiwan SemiconductorManufacturing Company Limited (TSMC).

The newprocess and design rules enable a number of substantial

improvements over theOmniBSI technology including improved pixel layout, better isolation, and significantly reduced crosstalk, saidOmniVision. As applied toOmniVision's 8-megapixel sensor product portfolio, these advances include a 20 percent improvement in peak quantumefficiency in all color channels, a 35 percent improvement in low-light sensitivity and a 45 percent increase in full-well capacity.

TheOV8830 fits into the industry standardmodule size of 8.5 x 8.5 x 6

mmand is nowavailable for sampling.Mass production is expected to start in the second half of 2011.

Shunt protectors target LED lighting apps

Bourns, Inc. has developed a line of open LED shunt protection devices for LED lighting applications. The Bourns LSP-Series enables LED lighting applications configured in strings to be more robust and reliable.

As an example,most LED designs

include solid-state lighting luminaries configured in series strings of 20 ormore LEDs. In this configuration, an open LED can cause the entire LED string to go dark, resulting in reduced performance, possiblemaintenance calls and warranty returns, said Bourns. When a Bourns LSP-Series shunt protector is added to the LED design, it allows the unaffected lights in the string to remain illuminated by shunting current around the inoperable LED.

The open LED shunt protectors target a variety of LED lighting

applications including light bulbs, lighting fixtures and backlighting systems. The series is available in fourmodels: LSP0600BJR-S, LSP0900BJR-S, LSP1300BJR-S and LSP1800BJR-S. Product samples are available through Bourns' distribution partners.

Fujitsu Components America, Inc. has released a series of Gen 2 PCI Express card-edge connectors for high-reliability applications in harsh environmental conditions.

The FCN-07J series consists of 8x (98-

position) and 12x (140-position) vertical mount, press-fit connectors. The connectors

use Fujitsu's patented, split-beamcontact design to ensure redundant, two-points of contact on the PCB pad, which provide a reliable and robust connection against vibration, shock and temperature changes, said Fujitsu. Applications include high-end servers, super computers, and industrial equipment.

The lead-free, RoHS compliant FCN-07J

connectors feature a 1.1-A DC contact rating, a 500-VAC dielectric withstanding voltage, and a 50-VAC voltage rating. The operating temperature range is -55 deg C to +85 deg C.

Semtech Corp. has expanded its EcoSpeed DC/DC converter platformwith the launch of the SC171 (1A) and SC172 (2A) buck regulators. Like all EcoSpeed regulators, these devices incorporate the company's advanced adaptive on-time (AOT) architecture, which uses an advanced control loop that eliminates the need for loop compensation components and enables the use of ceramic input and output capacitors.

Both the SC171 and SC172 are

programmable from200 kHz to 1MHz, enabling designers to optimize their power supply tomaximize either the conversion efficiency or the solution size, said Semtech. They also feature Semtech's proprietary SmartDrive technology, which is a two-step,

high-side FET turn-on technology designed to reduce EMI in noise-sensitive applications.

Both devices provide high efficiency across

the entire load range, with up to 95 percent peak operating efficiency and selectable, ultrasonic power save (PSAVE),which lowers the switching frequency to cater to light-load requirements during standby. When the load changes fromstandby to full load, the cycle-by- cycle response exits PSAVEmode to provide very fastwake-up recovery time. This enables power designers tomeet "green" regulations, whilemaintaining fast user performance.

The SC171 and SC172 are available in

production quantities. Evaluation boards are also available.
