FordMotor has announced that its supply base is adding 5,500 jobs globally to help support the global launch of the new Ford Focus, which is set to reach dealer showrooms across Europe and North America. These suppliers include Robert Bosch, Continental, Faurecia, Johnson Controls, Lear, TRWAutomotive and Visteon. Ford says of the 310 suppliers in 22
countriesmaking parts for the newFocus, many are adding jobs, facilities and equipment in local communities to produce the vehicle. "Suppliers are critical to the success of the
new Focus, and they are stepping up to support Ford in this important launch," stated Tony Brown, group vice president, Ford Global Purchasing, Dearborn,Mich.
NKK Switches is providing single-click 3D CAD models for its switches at the website of electronic components distributor Digi-Key. This new integrationmakes finding part number-specific 3Dmodels of NKK switches as simple as downloading a data sheet, said the switchmanufacturer.
NKK's 3D CADmodels enable engineers to
easily integrate complexmodels into their designs at no charge by downloading part number- specificmodels directly fromcorresponding Digi- Key productWeb pages. NKK is the first switch manufacturer, and one of only two electronic componentmanufacturers, to implement this capability on the Digi-Keywebsite.
14 |March 2011 Avnet EMsells eco-friendly batteries
Avnet ElectronicsMarketing Americas, a business region of Avnet, Inc., will carry the complete line of rechargeable solid-state batteries and evaluation kits fromCymbet Corporation. This distribution agreement covers Cymbet's entire line of EnerChip solid state batteries (SSB) and development tools, including the new EnerChip EP Energy Processor Universal Energy Harvesting EVAL- 10 Kit and the EnerChip CC Solar Energy Harvesting EVAL-09 Kit.
Cymbet's EnerChips are used in power
back-up, embedded energy and energy harvesting applications. EnerChip SSBs are used in several industries including industrial control, medical, consumer electronics, appliances, handheld devices, transportation,
renewable energy and wireless sensors. Because EnerChip SSBs are packaged in standard dual-flat no-lead (DFN) or quad-flat no-lead (QFN) packages, the batteries use surface-mount technology assembly and are reflow solder tolerant.
The EnerChip CC is a rechargeable solid-
state battery co-packaged with integrated powermanagement functions that provides a cost-effective single chip drop-in solution, said Avnet. Cymbet's energy-efficient products are available fromAvnet ElectronicsMarketing Americas and online at

Supplier expansions support new Ford Focus launch
Production of the Ford Focus is under way
at Ford's Saarlouis Assembly Plant in Germany and at theMichigan Assembly Plant inWayne,Mich. Production will be expanded to Ford's plant in St. Petersburg, Russia, later this year, with production in the Asia Pacific region scheduled for 2012, when new Ford plants come on line in Chongqing, China, and Rayong, Thailand. Focus, which is part of the company's new
global C-car platform, also sets new benchmarks for supplier component commonalitywith 80 percent of the car's parts and components in common around theworld. "The new Focus raises the bar for Ford and
our suppliers in terms of common parts and global processes that will pay off with higher quality and lower costs," stated Brown. "It also represents a new era in how we work with our supply base. The high level of communication, early information sharing and data transparency between Ford and our supply base is paying off for all of us as we move into the global launch," he added.
