This year we promoting and supporting research

The College’s Research Symposium took place in York as part of the Optometry Tomorrow Conference and included keynote addresses from Professors Rachel North and Peng Tee Khaw. More than 20 oral and poster presentations were featured.

The College’s Research team has also continued to contribute to the development of the European Academy and helped to develop the programme for the Academy’s 2010 Conference in Copenhagen and the 2011 Conference in Prague. Research staff have represented the College at a range of meetings nationally and internationally, in particular at events relating to commissioning services in primary care. These meetings provide an essential opportunity for us to promote the College’s activities and interests and to maintain and develop further relationships with the sector.

Basic and translational research This year we invested over £200,000 in research grants as part of our commitment to developing the researchers of the future and building a strong evidence-base for the profession. This work is funded by our members through a contribution from members’ subscription fees. We funded four Postgraduate Scholarships, four Summer Scholarships and seven Travel Bursaries. We also launched new Research Excellence Awards. Awarded annually, they recognise excellence and celebrate outstanding

achievement in the fields of optometry, optics and vision science.

Applied research Sixteen projects have been funded through the Small Grants Scheme. Opportunities for members to gain experience of contributing to research have also been developed, with projects concerned with primary eyecare services and adults with learning difficulties and dementia already under way. Further training and information resources are also in development. The College has continued to develop practice-based

research in optometry through the iPRO scheme for support for practice-based research, giving optometrists opportunities to develop research skills and contribute directly to the evidence-base for optometric practice.

Commissioning research The College’s Research Committee has advised on the commissioning of targeted research projects that are intended to produce outputs that will fill gaps in the current evidence-base or produce up-to-date information crucial to understanding the sector, shaping policy and providing a clear profile for the profession as it is now, and some insight into potential challenges that the profession and our members may face. Our first commissioned research projects will report shortly. New project proposals are being developed to examine age, ethnicity and sight test frequency, and paediatric care. Future projects will be informed by the results of the first projects to ensure we achieve maximum value.
