CBC enjoys some “off-piste”
As I’m sure we all agree, 2008 and 2009 were a totally life changing period, and affected us all on so many levels. Few will have been more affected than the specialist recruitment providers whose livelihood depends on the movement into and amongst (and not just out) of the banking and financial services sectors.
Whilst the banks, in particular, are already perceived to be guilty of having short memories, the lessons learnt gave us the behavioural and organisational rigour to capitalise on the mild bounceback that kicked off 2010. For CBC, 2010 went a long way to repairing the damage of the previous two years, and in many ways our performance reflected the indices and general market sentiment of the year i.e. a strong first six months followed by a steady grind for the last six. Fundamentally, we have seen a shift in how many of our clients are utilising our services. The flow of traditional sales- based roles remains, to an extent, but there is a much greater demand for our services in the harder-to-fill areas of business transformation, operational risk, compliance, and asset management. For CBC, 2009 brought about other challenges. We were presented with an opportunity to go “off piste,” securing a pan-European campaign for a major global insurer.
Mastering a new sector was one challenge but nothing compared to grasping the cultural nuances across six European countries. The fee income was a welcome relief albeit the novelty of continental travel soon wore off. This year, 2011, has commenced with a real surge in potential opportunity not only across asset finance and leasing but across financial services as a whole. It is very encouraging to receive assignments from companies who appear to have lain dormant for the last two or three years, and from previously benign sectors. What is a general concern is that the pool of talent is severely diminished post-crash, thus providing greater choice for those with a proven and successful track record. Only time will tell whether this will have a positive / upward effect on salaries and bonuses.
Overall we expect 2011 to be a year of slowly increasing opportunity (lest we forget the hard lessons learnt and allow complacency to return) not only to specialist search and selection but to financial services as a whole.
