GETTING THERE/AROUND
DAILY TO MAURITIUS
It’s never been easier to get to Mauritius with more fl ight options than ever before
Getting there In spite of the 12-hour fl ight from the UK, Mauritius is relatively jetlag-free, with a time difference of GMT +4 hours. Air Mauritius and British Airways
offer non-stop scheduled fl ights from Heathrow to Mauritius while Emirates provides a good connection via Dubai. Air Mauritius has increased frequency
to six direct (day or night) fl ights a week from Heathrow. Under a codeshare with Air France it fl ies daily from seven regional airports (Birmingham, Manchester, Newcastle, Aberdeen, Glasgow, Edinburgh) via either LHR or Paris Charles de Gaulle and six times a week from Bristol, convenient for British travellers living outside London. British Airways operates a direct
service from Heathrow (Gatwick from winter 2011) to Mauritius each Sunday, Wednesday and Friday. Emirates operates 14 daily fl ights
to Dubai from London Heathrow, Gatwick plus Manchester, Birmingham Newcastle and Glasgow and four onward fl ights a week to Mauritius. The Airbus A380 fl ies on some services from Heathrow and Manchester to Dubai. Air Seychelles also fl ies to Mauritius.

Getting around Mauritius is a decent size for a tropical island – 28 x 40 miles (45x65kms), so one- to two-hour drives to attractions are not uncommon. The key is to explore a region at a time or alternatively, by theme or interest. Driving is on the left and self-drive
is getting more popular. Rent a trendy jeep or four-wheel drive from leading international players Hertz, Avis, Sixt and Europcar, and reputable, cheaper local company, ADA, which all have desks at the airport or leading resorts. To feel the wind in your hair, hire a motorbike through Grand Baie Travel & Tours or use pedal power. Many resorts are now offering bicycles for hire. To take the hassle out of driving and
directions, taxis are ubiquitous and well priced for excursions. Easier still, take half- or full-day excursions by minibus to the island’s sights and experiences with companies like Solis. Some have a regional focus, others are themed such as ‘Journey into the Past’, ‘Adventurous Mauritius’ or ‘Island Souvenir’. Tapping into the worldwide trend for authentic local experiences, excursions to Mauritian families are also available.
