island, how to decide where to stay? The Royal Palm in the northwest, the One&Only Le Saint Geran, Le Touessrok in the east, Maradiva Villas Resort & Spa in the west, which scooped the award for ‘World’s Leading Island Resort’ at the World Travel Awards 2010, are the island’s fl agship resorts. The Oberoi, Constance Prince

Naïade follows closely with seven resorts, including the three-star plus family-friendly Merville Beach in Grand Baie and the contemporary four-star Tamassa in the developing area of Bel Ombre. Sun Resorts owns four resorts –

the fl agship Le Touessrok, family favourites Sugar Beach and La Pirogue, and the trendy four-star plus Long Beach which is due to open in Spring 2011. Constance Hotels has the posh Le Prince Maurice and Belle Mare Plage, both on the island’s glamorous east coast. Veranda Resorts has six properties,

The four-star deluxe Sands

Resort & Spa, with an upgraded infi nity pool right on the beach and sea-facing rooms overlooking

Tamarin Bay where dolphins play, is a lovely elegant hideaway for couples.

“Competitiveness has led to diversity of accommodation on Mauritius which now offers a mix of stunning boutique hotels, found in our new dedicated brochure and popular with couples, as well as larger resorts with self-catering, half board and all-nclusive options.” MARTIN BAMFORD, RESERVATIONS AND OPERATIONS MANAGER, ELITE VACATIONS

Good three stars include Silver

Beach on a white sandy beach near Trou d’Eau Douce on the east coast and Blue Lagoon Hotel, close to Blue Bay marine park in the southeast. Self-catering beach bungalows, villas and apartments are for hire near Mauritius’ most popular beaches, but are not secure if not serviced. Less usual accommodation options are found in the interior and include wooden chalets in the grounds of colonial houses St Aubin or Eureka, African-style thatched cottages with a view at Kestrel Valley or chalets in the forested mountains through La Verangue sur Morne near Chamarel.

Superb cuisine and endless ways to relax are key elements of any holiday
