Mauritius constantly has new product to entice both fi rst-time and repeat visitors. Here is a selection of the island’s most recent and imminent hotel and resort openings
stunning village-style fi ve- star all-suite and pool villa accommodation set in tropical
parkland on one of the best stretches of beach in the northwest, Beachcomber’s Trou Aux Biches opened in November 2010 after a two-year £60 million rebuild. Ibiza-style living has arrived on the
island with the opening of the first Nikki Beach-style ‘C Beach’ Club next door to Heritage Le Telfair in Bel Ombre in December. Mauritius’ only beach club offers a ‘barefoot chic’
Mauritius has a tropical climate with coastal temperatures ranging from around 23°C to 30°C while inland temperatures, at 1,969 feet (600 metres) above sea level are three to fi ve degrees cooler. The western and northern regions are warmer and relatively drier and
less humid than the east and south. Winter (May/October) is warm and dry while summer (Nov/ April) is hot, humid and more rainy
experience for all ages on 400 metres of beach including two restaurants and a lounge bar. Coming in April 2011 is Sun Resorts’ five-star 225-room Long Beach, true to its name, which brings ‘carefree piazza-style living’ to the east coast. Starwood’s prestigious St Regis opens on the exclusive Le Morne in the

southwest in September 2011. It has 174 rooms and suites and three villas, with signature butler service. Boutique is getting bigger, with the
chic beachside 13-room Le Cardinal Exclusive Resort opening on Trou aux Biches last September. December saw the launch of the four-star plus 50-room Tamarina Hotel, Beach, Golf & Spa on the west coast’s Tamarina Golf Estate and, on the south coast, Sofi tel’s fi ve-star eco-chic boutique- style hotel So Mauritius, with 92 suites and pool villas, butler service and a 100m swimming pool. Banyan Tree’s 50-suite boutique
four-star deluxe resort Angsana Balaclava opens on Turtle Bay in the northwest in Summer 2011, with pools in most rooms and an Angsana Spa. Villa living continues apace with Villas Valriche Experience opening 40 luxury villas in Bel Ombre last September. December saw Villas de Maitre open 16 new two/three-bed pool villas. Also new was Athena Villas in Grand Baie and Paradise Beach, chic five-star serviced apartments on Pointe D’Esny in the southeast, which mark the first condo-style

development anywhere on the island. New island attractions include the
150-year old colonial mansion Chateau de Labourdonnais in the northeast, producing its own agricultural rum. Visitors can also take a tipple there or at the new Rhumerie de Chamarel. In 2011, the Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority is promoting the ‘Vanilla Island’ concept - island hopping to neighbouring islands, Reunion, The Seychelles and Rodrigues.
The Facts You Need Where is it? In the Indian Ocean some 1243 miles (2000km) from Africa’s southeast coast. It has an area of 720 sq miles (1865 sq km) with 205 miles (330 km) of coastline. The island of Rodrigues is also part of Mauritius.
History/People Known to the Arabs since the 10th century, Mauritius has since been occupied by the Dutch, French and British becoming independent in 1968. Peopled by Indians, Africans, Chinese and Europeans, its population is 1,251,000.
