SPECIAL REPORT: ECOBUILD 2011 Ecobuild 2010
Energy will take centre-stage at Ecobuild which, having outgrown its former venue, will be taking place at London’s ExCeL on Tuesday 01 – Thursday 03 March 2011.
demonstrates how they can help provide low-cost, low-disruption, but high impact solutions to adapt and re-use space, time and materials to address current and future challenges in the workplace. And of course it wouldn’t be Ecobuild without a whole host of new and surprising events, and the 2011 event certainly won’t disappoint. On Tuesday, 02 March ‘Rock star physicist’ Professor Brian Cox will be presenting an award to the winner of the CIOB’s Inner Space 2050 competition for students aged 11 – 12 years to design sustainable work and living spaces in orbit. Back in the exhibition, visitors will be invited to sink their teeth into some BRE Bites, a series of 10 minute ‘tasters’ on a range of topics including BREEAM In Use, Passivhaus, and Feed in Tariffs taking place daily on the BRE stand, and the Ecobuild Fringe is gearing up to deliver an eclectic programme again in 2011. An innovation that’s bound to be popular for Ecobuild 2011 is the

gainst the background of economic uncertainty over the last few years, and the current spending cuts, energy – and in particular, generating and
saving it – has become increasingly important to those designing, constructing and operating buildings. And Ecobuild, which has grown to reflect the sector’s most important challenge – that of creating a sustainable built environment – is taking on that agenda with vigour. Ecobuild’s new Energy in Buildings free seminar series, in association with The Carbon Trust, devotes the equivalent of four days to the subject, covering everything from Drivers for improving energy efficiency: EPCs, DECs, CRCs, The argument for efficient building services and Recovering heat, saving energy to How to manage efficient buildings in use, The future’s efficient, the future’s smart and Lighting the way forward: refurbishing the technology to reduce energy consumption.
Its speakers are as impressive as the programme is expansive, with industry experts representing the likes of CIBSE, BEAMA, Arup, BRE, EC Harris and BSRIA lined up for a packed three days. And a packed three days it certainly is, with more than 100 further free

seminars ranging over the most pressing issues facing the sector, including Future energy, Regulations revealed and Simplifying standards, guides and tools. The renowned Ecobuild conference, in association with the UK Green Building Council, has expanded to three streams for 2011 – all free to attend – and continues the theme of reducing energy consumption as Professor Max Fordham, CIBSE President Andy Ford and Chief Executive of Scottish and Southern Energy, Ian Marchant discuss From megawatts to negawatts: taking the energy out of buildings. Other conference highlights include Peak everything – the end of non- renewable resources, Ending our love affair with more and The road to a low carbon society: making change happen. There’s plenty to see in the 1,300 supplier strong Ecobuild exhibition too, with some of the biggest names in the business showcasing control systems and energy and water efficiency technologies, including Honeywell, Echelon, Daikin, Remeha, Stiebel Eltron and Danfoss. Certain to provoke interest on the exhibition floor is the Cool workspace attraction, sponsored by Capita Symonds, which features leading-edge technologies and design solutions – including phase change surface materials – and
introduction of an online itinerary planner which allows visitors to plan their visit in advance, including the times and locations of conference and seminar sessions, and live demonstrations, as well as listing exhibitors and products of interest. The exhibition will be organised in technology zones, with similar products, relevant seminars and attractions, all located in the same area.
Getting around Ecobuild 2011 will be easier still at the new venue of course. ExCeL’s straightforward layout, with seminars taking place in rooms along the perimeter of the exhibition halls, and the conference located off the central boulevard, is simple to navigate. And getting there is easy too. ExCeL is easily accessible by public transport, offers free cycle parking and has ample car parking on site. The nearest rail station is Custom House for ExCeL, approximately 10 minutes from Canary Wharf. Key interchanges for the DLR are Bank, Tower Hill, Canning Town and Shadwell. During Ecobuild shuttle buses will run from the Thames Clipper river taxi stop at Canary Wharf (10 minutes) and from London City Airport (5 minutes). Get your free ticket now at
