6% saving in energy and costs. This achievement has gained attention from the Carbon Trust Standard which recognises organisations for real carbon reduction. Based on a rigorous, independent assessment, it certifies that organisations have measured, managed and reduced their carbon emissions across their own operations, and are committed to reducing them year on year. As a result of this impressive carbon reduction, the Centre’s electricity provider has offered St. Enoch a green tariff electricity contract based on its dedication to the environment.
Susan Nicol, General Manager of St. Enoch Centre, said: “This is a great achievement for the Centre and underlines our commitment to both the community and the environment. “We have had a fantastic year and our £150M transformation has proven very popular with shoppers. However it is very important to balance the Centre’s growth with reducing its carbon footprint.” The award is part of a wide range of environmental triumphs for St. Enoch which also includes the training of ‘Best Green Ambassadors’ to help champion energy conservation within the Centre. The Centre also recently received another prestigious award for its

St. Enoch also won a Green Apple Award presented in November 2009 during a special prize giving ceremony at the House of Commons.

commitment to the environment when its innovative green action plan dealing with issues such as waste, water and energy management won a Green Heroes 2010 Wall Shield.
The Shields are awarded annually in recognition of companies, councils and communities carrying out projects which enhance the environment and which wish to share their experience and knowledge with the world.
The judges commented: “A
management-led action plan tackling waste, water and energy management has the potential to reduce costs and environmental effects. The plan devised by St. Enoch has already made breakthroughs into these ambitions as demonstrated by recycling up from 30 – 50%, and electricity is all from renewable sources. “Another innovation is carbon

The Centre also plays a key role in the Recycle Zone scheme aimed at helping to reduce Scotland’s emissions and increase public awareness of recycling. The project, which launched in early 2010 and is the first of its kind in Glasgow City Centre, is a partnership between Coca-Cola Enterprises, WRAP Scotland, RECOUP and St. Enoch Centre and enables the public to deposit cans, plastic bottles, paper and general waste for recycling.
Susan Nicol, said: “In 2009 alone shoppers at St Enoch Centre bought 74,000 bottles and cans out of the 14 vending machines we have in the Centre – and we’re expecting that figure to increase as the Centre expands. If every one of those bottles and cans were deposited at the Recycle Zone, not only would it divert almost 2 tonnes of waste from landfill each year, it would also achieve a carbon saving of almost 8 tonnes.

a big effect on our environment, and I am delighted that St Enoch Centre has been chosen as the first place in Glasgow to spearhead this initiative.”
Iain Gulland, WRAP Director for Scotland, said: “WRAP is supporting the investment in facilities that enable people to recycle away from home. It is great to see a high profile venue like St. Enoch Centre taking the lead like this and we hope to see many other major public facilities in Scotland following suit.” Even with the tremendous success of the first phase of St. Enoch’s transformation the Centre remains focused on building on its achievements, giving customers more value and strengthening Glasgow’s position on the retail map even further while continuing to support the environment. Susan Nicol said: “The first phase of
St. Enoch’s redevelopment continues to bring new retailers and opportunities to Glasgow however transformation is a long-term goal for St. Enoch and we hope to build on these great successes with plans for a second phase of transformation in future years.
“St. Enoch is committed to giving back to the local community and enhancing the environment. We are delighted with the accolades and recognition we have received over the past couple of years for our green credentials. “We will continue to build upon the great work which has been done by focusing on reducing our carbon footprint even further in the future and ensuring that the Centre’s growth and success is matched by its strong environmental awareness.”
