hard work of all our staff and the management’s forward-thinking attitude toward sustainable tourism. “Far from resting on our laurels, we are aiming to reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions by a further 5% and
do everything we can to become even greener without compromising on the excellent service offered to our customers.” Having assessed the environmental impact of all its activities, the hotel was able to introduce a number of measures to become greener. Where possible local suppliers and contractors are employed and encouraged to share Carden Park’s green practices. Local and fair-trade produce are prominent in all its menus and company vehicles are run on efficient power sources e.g. electric golf buggies and a company fleet of diesel cars. So far the resort has been able to shrink its electricity consumption by 5%, which equates to 85 tonnes of CO2
, its
heating oil consumption by 7.5% and gas consumption by 9.5 %. Water flow to bedrooms has been reduced by 50% and the amount of energy used by the pool ventilation is down by 80%.
Staff now recycle 40% of all waste. As much surplus material as possible, from paper to ink cartridges, is recycled and even the kitchen oil is sent away to be turned into bio fuel.
A prime example of the hotel’s innovative eco-thinking has been the introduction of an on-site glass crusher, which transforms glass waste into sand to be scattered on the two championship golf courses thus improving drainage. The high tech crusher uses a series of hammers to pound the bottles into very fine sand instantaneously. The result is a substance soft enough to touch and ideal for spreading on the resort’s roughs, fairways and tees to maximise aeration. Always keen to lead in its field,
Carden Park is believed to be the only resort in the UK to recycle all of its surplus glass on site for use on its own golf courses. “We produce up to 30 tonnes of glass every year at Carden”, Hamish says. “It was costing us £200 a week to have the glass taken away to be recycled and even more to bring in the equivalent amount of sand for use on the golf courses.
