hat does it mean to be an explor- er? For Steve Barton, exploration
means enthusiastically engaging with his surroundings, wherever he may be. His iconic paintings depict the tropical beaches and relaxing getaways that offer time to look at life from another point of view. In his career as an art- ist, his work has taken him to Hawaii, Australia and the Caribbean Sea, but more importantly, it has brought him closer to his collectors. Like any artist, he paints with a dis-
tinct and personal aesthetic, a visual voice that he brings to life with honed craftsmanship. He knows that a paint- ing must be important for its owner as well as its creator. It is his desire to find that which enlivens and entices us to seek out the best in life. Steve is quite familiar with Hawaii.
He enjoys everything it has to offer. Steve states, “I’m reintroducing my- self to it,” as he pays for his breakfast
“North Shore Calling”
and shops with his wife on the island. Indeed, as his paintings like “North Shore Calling” and “Aloha Lifestyle” are a testament to Steve’s years of his- tory in Hawaii, they appeal to so many others who have found relaxation and tranquility there as well. In other waters, guests aboard a
Caribbean cruise had Steve Barton all to themselves. He has led paint- ing classes of forty to fifty students at sea, offering them the chance to learn from a living master and find their own artistic spirit. In this way, Barton rein- vents the artists’ role in art itself. Rather than a static, invisible player, the artist is now a teacher, a host, and an en- tertainer.
Steve’s relationship with his col-
lectors leads him to paint a great deal of commissions. When he paints a scene for someone, he feels that, “It’s about finding that little memory and interpreting it for them.” His talents al-

low him to expand upon the essentials and bring a memory to life with his own embellishments. Steve Barton emphasizes that we
do not need to run miles away from our home in order to venture out of our everyday lives. His paintings may depict tropical islands, some hidden resort locale. However, these scenes represent a mental and emotional vacation from everyday stresses.
