ART I S T F EATURE New on the Scene Emerging Artist Daniel Ryan draws inspiration from San Diego’s Coast
What comes to your mind first when you think about San Di- ego? Perhaps it’s the beautiful sunny weather, or the miles of golden Pacific beaches… San Diego’s coastal life becomes even more vibrant, thanks to the paintings by Daniel Ryan,
an emerging artist represented by EC Galleries. Originally born in Maine, Daniel moved to San
Diego at a young age with his Navy family. Mild Califor- nian climate and the proximity to the coast influenced his interest in surfing and other water-related activities. His favorite pastime used to be watching sail boats on the ho- rizon and that passion has always been present in his life. Simultaneously, Daniel found another passion in
drawing. He began painting photographs he saw in surfer magazines, and that was when he realized that art would be an inseparable part of his life forever. He soon entered the School of Art at San Diego State University and con- centrated his studies on painting and photography. Right after graduation, Daniel started venturing out
into various art media and experimented a lot with tech- niques seeking his own signature style. He now counts Camille Pissarro, Alfred Sisley and Gustav Klimt as his favorite artists who have influenced his own painting technique. Daniel considers himself very close in spirit to Klimt in particular; even though they belong to different époques, both are End of the Century artists who learned

a lot from the Impressionists in order to create their own unique style. Impressionism is a style of choice for Daniel, also because of his love of creating a loose representa- tion of what surrounds him. Last year, Daniel rediscovered his lifelong interest in
the maritime theme and sought inspiration in the scenes he remembered from his youth. Feeling his best in nature, he spent a lot of time outdoors studying local coastal life and the surrounding beauty of San Diego’s mountain ranges and deserts to create his very own color palette. Cold blue hues are masterfully mixed by Daniel’s brush with warm amber and gold ones to create a unique at- mosphere of the Pacific Ocean. Splashes of a crispy white paint for the sail boats add liveliness to the canvases and remind us that San Diego is one of the major port cities in the United States. Daniel’s current interest in land and seascapes
seems to be a logical evolutionary step in his creative work. Though known to his friends and fam- ily as a surfer and hiker, he also enjoys and spends a lot of time reading and studying old European ports and fishing villages, as well as countryside scenes. He finds fascination in sto- rytelling and believes that there is a strong bond between writers and artists. However, those subject matters can only go that far—Daniel uses references only as a starting point and lets his imagination create a journey to unexplored places, while inviting all art lovers to join him on a visually stunning trip.
