Mario Covic
t has been said that the eyes are the window to the soul. Where one look—one gesture—can say everything, photographer Mario Covic captures a moment through his lens.
Mario Covic travels across America and the world in
search of the next adventure. His love for the outdoors and an educational background in environmental sci- ence encourage his photographic pursuits. As a freelance photographer hired by Anusara Yoga,
he has documented lifestyle/travels in Japan, and events like the Wanderlust Festival and the Anusara Grand Gathering at the Yoga Journal Conference in Estes Park, Colorado. He has also been an official photographer for other festivals like Burning Man and Bhakti Fest. Covic’s photographs can be seen in Riviera Magazine, Vision Magazine, Yoga Journal, and Off the Easel Magazine. His clients include major athletic brands REI, Prana, and Lululemon. Among the beauty and wonder of nature, “I am most
interested in people as my subject,” Covic explains. “I love the opportunity to expand my experiences through the people I meet, and capture their true essence in sur- rounding urban and natural settings. When photograph- ing events, and even people, I love to capture the pure essence of real moments.” Covic began taking photographs of his many trav-
els, and quickly grew in his passion for the art. “When I discovered I had an affinity to photography, I dived in
completely,” he explains. “After about seven months with my first SLR (shooting in manual), a light bulb turned on in my mind... I understood how light works with a cam- era... it was as if I started seeing the world in a whole new way. In the years to come I started enjoying taking photos of people in the environment. In 2008, I started being asked to shoot portraits, weddings and events. In 2009, I quit my job as a Land Use/Environmental Planner for the County of San Diego to pursue a full time career in photography.” Mario Covic continually hones his craft and looks
to others for instruction and inspiration. He admires the work of Annie Leibovitz, Ansel Adams, and Galen Rowell, to name a few. He reflects that he “was fortunate to have some friends who are also professional photographers whom I could ask questions. One of my biggest influenc- es was and still is a local photographer named Michael Svoboda.” He focuses upon subjects with which he can identify, making his photography an extremely authentic undertaking. “I have gravitated toward yoga as a theme because of my own personal transformation as a result of my yoga practice. I have also gravitated toward events centered on cutting edge fashion, visionary and expan- sive art and music.” He has grown to know the world in an entirely
new way through his career, enjoying his flexibility and the opportunity to meet new people. He notes,
“The biggest thing I learned though, when working with people, is that I had to build trust with my sub- ject. I practiced connecting with people and then capturing them in their element.” Mario feels lucky to be able to live his dream:
“I want to achieve deep human connections and share the light and love that I see all around me while building a healthy, prosperous life.”
