MEMORIES THROUGH ART

Meet Art Collectors Molly and Dan Laufer

How were you introduced to the idea of art collecting? We consider our first introduction to the idea of collecting art when we moved to San Diego in 2009. We attended a local art festival, where we were exposed to hundreds of artists with different styles and mediums and spent two days talking about what we liked, what we didn’t like, and what intrigued us.

How long have you been collecting art? Although we’ve never actively thought about collecting until recently, we realized that we have actually been col- lecting art for years! A landscape of the Santorini coastline on a piece of reclaimed wood, a picture handmade from eggshells from Vietnam, a vibrant watercolor of a flower- lined street, an oil painting from an artist in Monmartre on our honeymoon… looking around our apartment we realized that we had been art collectors for a long time!

What do you find most rewarding about collecting art? The ability to look around and see things that remind us of the places we’ve been, the experiences we’ve had, and the feelings we’ve felt when and where the art was en- joyed and purchased. It is a physical representation of our tastes, our experiences and who we are.

What do you look for in a specific piece? We’re not out scouring for the perfect piece. When we see a piece that we have to keep backing up to look at it again and again and we continue to talk about it long after we’ve seen it, then we know.

Who are your favorite artists? We definitely have a bias towards San Diego-based art-

ists. Our favorite (EC Galleries) artists are Michael Flohr and Christopher M.

What has been your most interesting experience as art collectors? While on our honeymooon in Paris, we were strolling the cobblestone streets of Monmartre, admiring all of the art- ists, many of whom painted beautiful, realistic portraits, flower fields and Parisian café scenes. We spent a long time enjoying one specific artist’s beautiful paintings of vibrant red poppy fields. We learned about her tech- niques and how she painted. We decided to consider our purchase decision over French onion soup and café au lait. An hour later, we headed back to the square, our minds made up and ready to buy. As we wrapped up our transaction and turned to walk away, a woman ran up to us and said, “Oh no! You just bought my painting!” We looked at each other and said “Your painting?” The woman explained, “I have been sitting at that café over there, eyeing that painting for an hour! You just got a great one!” she responded. We weren’t sure how to re- spond other than to smile and secretly be grateful that we got a very special painting!
