Building for the future T
BBI, currently Europe’s largest airport project, will be nearing completion in time for World Routes – making it the perfect time for the global air service development community to meet in Berlin.
oday, Berlin is recognised as one of the most dynamic, exciting, young and important cities in Europe and, indeed, the world. As the capital of Europe’s largest economy, its political signifi cance in European and global political circles is vast. However, at the heart of the city is a vibrant art and cultural scene, and a growing tourism industry is testament to Berlin’s popularity with European and international visitors alike. Until now, Berlin has not had a hub airport to refl ect its prominence in the international arena. That is all about to change with the opening of the brand new Airport Berlin Brandenburg International BBI in June 2012.
New opportunities
BBI is the largest airport construction project in Europe and, when complete, will offer airlines many more opportunities to develop new air services from the economically signifi cant Brandenburg region, particularly to Russia, CIS and the important economies of Asia. delegates will have the opportunity to catch an exclusive glimpse of the new airport for themselves this October.
Transportation hub
The single terminal will have an initial capacity of 27 million passengers when it opens. This can eventually be extended to handle up to 45 million passengers, if demand exists. Importantly for the airport, it will be a total transportation hub, with a high-speed ICE train station, which will connect to other European cities, and major highways linking the airport to Berlin and the rest of Germany.
Unlike the current situation, where alliance member airlines such as Lufthansa, British Airways and Air Berlin primarily serve Tegel and low-cost carriers such as easyJet, Ryanair and Germanwings mostly fl y to Schoenefeld, the new airport will bring all airlines together, presenting them with more opportunities for growth and cooperation. World Routes is always the event to be at but this year will be particularly exciting, with this brand new, major European hub preparing to open. It will be the place to discuss your future plans in Europe and beyond.
