In 2011, MIA plans to welcome SkyTeam alliance member KLM’s start of four weekly fl ights from Amsterdam on March 27.


Another service originating in the Netherlands is Dutch airline ArkeFly, which plans to start scheduled service from June 24 on Mondays and Fridays from Amsterdam to MIA, using Boeing 767-300ER aircraft. The fi rst stop will be Orlando-Sanford International Airport (SFB), where all passengers will clear federal inspection procedures, continue to MIA and then return non-stop to Amsterdam. Additionally, oneworld’s Iberia will launch direct fl ights from Barcelona to

Miami with three weekly fl ights starting on March 28. The airline expects to carry more than 50,000 passengers on the route in its fi rst year of operation.


Reasons for success Whether the passenger traffi c is for business or leisure, Mangos believes a combination of factors have contributed to the success of MIA in 2010. Destination traffi c continues to be a strong passenger generator, despite economic woes both in the United States and abroad, and Miami is now the second leading international tourist destination in the US after New York City. “Despite the global economics, we see continued strong


growth in the visitor segment of our business,” he says.


Mangos adds that the airport has also recently taken a very proactive approach to route development. “We have defi nitely been working the air service development circuit, some of which materialised in 2010, and we hope even more will be announced in 2011,” he says.


Of course, being the primary link between the US and Latin America is also a major plus for the airport’s aviation team. “Being the biggest gateway to Latin America quite simply attracts even more service and synergy to MIA. Nearly 50% of our international traffi c is now connecting, and nearly 50% of
