direct service from some South American countries.”

In addition to the ethnic traffi c originating from North America, there is a small amount of ethnic traffi c originating from Europe. Demand for fl ights back to the Caribbean from this

market is met by Iberia, Air Europa and Air France, who also carry a reasonable number of business travellers from Europe to Santo Domingo, says O’Brian. However, unsurprisingly for a Caribbean paradise, the bulk of European traffi c to the Dominican Republic is made up of direct charter, tour operator-driven traffi c to the tourist paradises such as Puerto Plata on the north coast. “These are fl ights coming from Manchester, Gatwick, Paris Charles de Gaulle and make up an important component of our air service development programme,” says O’Brian. He estimates that the Dominican Republic received in the region of 1.5 million European tourists in 2010.

Government support for air services These European fl ights form a vital part of the country’s tourism development plans and O’Brian says that the aviation and tourism industry receives support from the very highest political levels.
