Do you have many regular customers? Yes, many of our customers are regulars.
When is your busiest time of year? The last quarter of the year
Do you encourage reps to visit? Yes if they make an appointment and bring biscuits
How do you follow up if a product catches your eye? Usually Google it see what price people are selling it for, look at reviews, then contact product manufacturer for demo or sample, get cost prices etc.
Why do you deal with particular tool companies? Very Good promotions, quality of product, quality of service, reasonable margin on products and easy to deal with.
How would a company with good products to sell come to your notice?
I've discovered new products/companies @ trade shows, my customers will always tell me about great new products they have seen and usually ask me to source them.
Do you have a surprising ‘best seller’? Yes, I find that we have runs of popularity/demand for certain products. Rock salt has been very popular at the moment.
What changes are afoot? I like to keep our stores quite organic, growing and changing to suit the market, the market in our area has changed considerably since the government pulled the budget and investment on housing and development a couple of years ago.
How do you see the future of the tool trade?
Manufacturers keep increasing their prices and reducing our margins, also certain internet sites and mail order companies are devaluing products by selling at unnecessarily low pricing. I believe that competition is healthy and promotes growth, but ridiculous pricing is giving the consumer an unrealistic value of tools. This is very damaging to all involved in the tool trade.
Do you have a ‘Top Tip’? Extra value is the way to be profitable, not extra discount.
