Delwin Lewis Masters of Finance and Accounting, The University of Adelaide.

After finishing his degree Delwin found an entry level role with BT Financial Group working in Corporate Actions and Dividends for the company’s investment platform, WRAP. He’s also been able to undertake on-the-job training to keep his skills fresh in the dynamic financial sector workplace.

Describe the application process for your role with BT Financial Group. I had applied for the job via the career section of the company’s website and I spent a lot of time on making sure that I had a strong application and that I had addressed all the requirements in the job profile. I also made sure that I addressed the important values of the company and how I would be a perfect fit for the job and the organisation.

What’s a typical day like in your work? Our working hours are primarily from 8.30 am to 5 pm. A typical day at work is generally a mixed bag and depends on what’s happening in the corporate actions domain. Apart from having a quick coffee and checking on emails I do make it a point to check out Bloomberg to keep me abreast about the happenings in financial markets. As I mentioned, there is significant variety in my job and no two days are the same. However, there are certain things we do every single day.

How are you able to transfer your university skills and knowledge into the workplace? The skills and knowledge developed during my masters program proved to be a good base wherein I could co- relate and bridge the void at my workplace. Education would definitely help one in the long run and the knowledge gained probably would not be applied on day-to-day basis but it gives one a better understanding of an issue on a very concrete and constructive level.

Does BT Financial Group provide any structured training programs to its staff? BT Financial has very structured and effective training programs in place and they constantly update us on any new upbringings related to our business unit. But I guess the best training that one can have is on-the-job training wherein one deals in real issues at real time and tries to work around it.

What’s the best career advice you would give to others? Be persistent and try to excel in whatever you do and never give up.
