so you want to get a job?


It takes initiative, persistence, motivation and adaptation to find the job you want – more often than not, it won’t just fall in your lap!


The job hunt might not be an easy process. There’ll be bumps, failures and near-misses along the way. But it’s critical that you, as the one applying for work, actively push through the frustration you might feel.


Job hunting is a highly competitive process, and in the current fluctuating job market, it’s up to you to make the most of the opportunities that come along. There are many great resources out there to help – in this book, and through your friends, family, lecturers, careers advisors and online – but they won’t come to you. You need to be prepared to go out and actively find them yourself.


If you don’t get that first job – or the second, fifth, even tenth – don’t give up! You’re not the only one who has struggled.


Remember these key responsibilities: Your contacts might be able to offer suggestions, but you are the one applying!


Actively research organisations and opportunities. A bit of background knowledge on a company, its culture and working environment can be invaluable and may give you a clearer idea of whether it’s a good fit for you.


Take advantage of the people around you for information Actively ask questions and network. Many people have gone through a similar job hunting process – get their advice!


Continually review and update your application If you’re not getting the jobs you want, review your approach with the people around you.


Revisit your résumé and application.


Ask for feedback from employers on why you didn’t make the cut.


It can take time From start to finish, the application process can be a long one. Government recruitment for a grad position can sometimes take three months or more, including interviews, assessment centres, security/background checks and formal offers being made.


Corporate sector recruitment may also be lengthy, so remember to be patient.


Stay positive - each step will better arm you for the next application!
