Overview


Building and construction is a key industry in Australia and New Zealand.


It creates residential and non-residential buildings (such as shops, offices, schools and hospitals), infrastructure (such as roads, bridges, water and electricity supply, sewerage and telecommunications) and land development.


Industry activities are undertaken within both the private and public sectors. The supply of goods and services in the industry is mainly sourced from, and used in, a range of Australian industries.


The work The construction sector is the fourth largest employer in Australia, representing approximately 9 per cent of the Australian workforce.


Building and construction professionals constitute a relatively low proportion of the industry. However there are employment opportunities for graduates with local government, civil engineering contractors, developers, private construction companies, specialist consultants and as professionals running their own businesses.


Graduate opportunities are mostly found in the following occupational areas: architecture; building and construction management; cartography and surveying; interior design; quantity surveying; civil and structural engineering; and urban and regional planning.


The building and construction industry has experienced strong growth in recent years. In the five years to 2010, the industry grew by 135,800 jobs, representing an average annual growth rate of 3.2 per cent.


What you need bachelor degree or higher qualification, or a minimum of five years relevant experience in a professional role


mathematical abilities are highly valued, as many roles involve the calculation of financial data and design physics


creativity and the ability to conceptualise ideas and project requirements based on client needs and transfer these concepts to technical drawings and illustrations


in-depth knowledge of design, engineering and technology is vital
