my grad experience
Rony Rianto Bachelor of Business Information Systems, RMIT University.
Rony undertook a Cooperative Year with Australia Post during his degree, which led to a full-time role as an architecture analyst after graduation.
Describe your Cooperative Year. I joined Australia Post in the logistics area and learned its electronic parcel (e-Parcel) system. Then during my last year of study, I requested a transfer to web and java integration services. The team consisted of 12 people. We worked together to provide support, development, project delivery, and management services for web and java applications, including an SAP application which uses Java for its user interfacing.
What does your current role entail? I work in Post IT, Enterprise Architecture (EA) department. My role is to assist the Principal Architecture Knowledge Management in the development, establishment and management of the Enterprise Knowledge Base of Australia Post. EA, in my world, is about structuring a set of strategic information that links business and IT and describes how the business operates and the technologies that it depends on.
How did your degree assist you with gaining employment? My degree is a combination of IT and business. Apart from learning IT (system design and analysis, programming, networking and database), it trained me to appreciate how a business operates. I gained broad knowledge around management, business analysis and finance. It also taught me professional ethics: to put customers first, take ownership and responsibility of your work, have a positive attitude, continue to learn and develop yourself, seek professional advice from colleagues, and respect each other. I always try my very best to satisfy my customers. I look at problems from a different angle and work on solutions that will save them time and money. I care about other people and it makes work very enjoyable. When you feel good about yourself, you influence other people to feel the same way.
What’s a typical day like in your job? My work is dynamic and I do different things from day to day. Colleagues seek my assistance on how they can capture, analyse and present information with the architecture tools used in Australia Post. Our clients, my manager and I establish and enforce governance, principles and guidelines around the agreed solution which differs depending on our clients’ requirements. I also promote and provide enhancement and support on the usage of the architecture tools. I receive feedback from clients and stakeholders on how we can improve the quality of data and the presentation of information. I assess its priority from a strategic point of view and work on the solution and delivery for improvement.
What career advice would offer other students? Get as much experience and knowledge from various areas in your respected field early so you know what role is the most suitable for you. When you decide to specialise in a specific role, you can understand and cooperate well with people from different areas. It also gives you the option to move to other areas when better opportunities become available.
