experience Laura Jones
Bachelor Information Technology (cooperative scholarship program), University of Technology, Sydney.
As part of her degree Laura undertook two internships. Her second internship led her into a career in the management consulting industry with BearingPoint.
Tell us about the work experience you undertook during university. I undertook two six-month internships while at university. My second internship was in the first semester of my final year of study. I was a business analyst at BearingPoint (BPt), a management and technology consulting firm. I was client facing from day one, working with the team at AAPT and I gained a broad range of technical and business experience dealing day to day with our key client team members.
What did you gain from your internships? During my internship I was involved in a range of activities including testing, business requirements gathering and providing proactive recommendations on potential improvements to the client’s contact centre. As an intern, I was exposed to a wide range of challenges and people which effectively prepared me to be confident as a graduate when applying for a permanent position. I had the opportunity to ‘test run’ working life and learnt the initial lessons and challenges each new graduate faces before graduation.
How did you get your first job after graduation? Like most graduates, I applied for jobs with various companies in my final year of university. I was offered a job with BearingPoint halfway into my internship and accepted the offer. My interview was very casual and the internship in a way was a long interview for both myself and the company. If I hadn’t worked well during my internship, I wouldn’t have been offered the job!
How did your degree assist you with gaining employment after graduation? UTS provided a great opportunity with the two internships structured as part of my degree. This meant that after only three years I had a degree and one year of relevant industry experience. I was also provided opportunities at university to attend company presentations where some companies would present to students at UTS on what the company does and what it offers graduates. It was great to start thinking about what I wanted to do, and didn’t want, from the start of my degree so it wasn’t a rush at the end to make the decision on where I wanted to apply for.
