Expert Panel Predictions for 2011

Expert Panel Paul Jones, UK SalesManager,Mitsubishi

What do you see being the 'next big thing' in 2011?

For Mitsubishi Electric the new and exclusive Pocketbook Machine with Gift Kiosk is looking like the must have retail instant print solution. Interest is already very high and opportunities for retail to develop pockets size photo gifts returning over 65 percent margin is great news. We have already seen from market research that the demand for photo gifts is set to increase as customers want more then just a standard print… Pocket books are available as 4” x 6” print format and customers have

What do you see being the 'next big thing' in 2011?

It's not strictly new but 3D came up a lot at photokina, so there's huge interest in this going into 2011. There's been lots of attempts at 3D over they years but it does appear that this time it has got its footing and will really take off. So where are the opportunities here for retailers? There are certainly plenty. At the moment display in its printed form comes in the format of lenticular prints but demand is increasing. If customers are enjoying capturing 3D images and displaying them on screens and televisions, it is clear that the demand is there and hopefully this will encourage the development and marketing of new solutions for 3D display. Secondly, and these aren't new at all but photobooks have the potential to do really well in 2011. What we need to focus on is selling these on the high street through

stores rather than online. We need to bring awareness to the public, who know the products exist but are still saying "where did you get that?" The demand is there - nobody looks at their friend's photobook and thinks 'I don't care where you got that as I'm never going to want one': we in our industry just need to make it very obvious that you can walk into a local store and have a photobook printed for you then. If we can do that then they're going to be huge in 2011.

In this issue we focus on event photography. How important is it to forge relationships with prevalent photographers, in your opinion?

It's certainly worth looking into for any D&P retailer. It is true that labs are small and cost-effective enough now for some event photographers to own their own and do their own prints but not all of them do, so this

market has not disappeared. Even if they do you can still offer them other products that they can't print themselves: large format, photogifts of course and gallery books. They may print their own 6x4"s on site but it would still be beneficial to both of your businesses to work together on post-event follow up.

How would you recommend going about this?

I'd recommend getting in touch with event organisers. They're the ones that book the photographers so they can put you in touch with them, and you can directly market additional products like photo-gifts to them. For example if a charity is running an event with a celebrity in attendance, they might want mugs or canvas prints of the pictures as well as standard prints, so you, the event photographer and the customer can work together. Make contact and see what you can do!

the option of choosing between 10 to 30 pages per book. There are a variety of layouts and themes available and once the customer is happy, their pocket book will be automatically completed in approximately 5 minutes!
