could do a little more. This is an encouraging attitude, as it is important that smaller companies make sure they comply with the regulations. In September of this year, a Birmingham-based hairdressing supplies wholesaler became the first company in the UK to be prosecuted for failing to meet its obligations under the WEEE Regulations. The Environment Agency brought the prosecution after routine investigations uncovered evidence that the company had imported a range of electrical items to the UK, but had failed to comply with the requirements placed on it by the WEEE and Packaging Regulations. The company was ordered to pay more than £30,000 in fines, compensation and costs.

Collection Recolight, the not-for-profit producer-led compliance scheme, has a nationwide network of more than 900 collection points. The locations of collection points that are open for all businesses to drop off their waste lamps can be found on the Recolight website (see below). It is very encouraging to see that nine out of 10

contractors said they place a great deal of importance on recycling lamps or that the practice is totally embedded within their business culture. This demonstrates the industry is taking its environmental responsibilities very seriously. The challenge now is to help those businesses who feel they could be doing more, and to ensure the same level of commitment to recycling WEEE is achieved amongst the general public.
