Elections Canada Launches New Website

With a new look and improved features, Elections Canada successfully launched their new website. According to EC, there were three guiding factors in the redesign:

• Improved Navigation • Usability • Accessibility for all users

Most of the old website’s content has been retained but reorganized.

Elections Canada reports, “These changes are intended to better reflect users’ needs by making the information easier to find. A key feature of our new site is its increased accessibility, offering users with special needs a better on-line experience. For example, the improved coding practices will enable screen-reading software for visually impaired users to function more effectively.”

Elections Canada invites you to explore new site http://www.elections.ca and offer comments and suggestions in the feedback box provided at the bottom of each page.

By-Elections held in 3 Federal ridings

Three Federal MP’s left their jobs on Parliament Hill to pursue the Chain of Office held by the Mayor of their respective cities with mixed results. Liberal veteran MP, Maurizio Bevilacqua, took

advantage of Vaughan, Ontario’s scandal-plagued problems and handily dumped incumbent Linda Jackson to become the new Mayor of Vaughan. In Manitoba, the colourful former Conservative

MP, Inky Mark, lost by a mere 40 votes to Eric Irwin who became the new Mayor in Dauphin. Irwin, a lawyer, not only defeated Mark, but also a former deputy mayor and the incumbent mayor. Sam Katz was returned as mayor of Winnipeg

defeating former NDP MP, Judy Wasylycia-Leis. The federal by-elections to fill the seats left

open by Bevilacqua, Mark, and Wasylycia-Leis were held on November 29. The Conservatives handily held on to the Dauphin-Swan-River- Marquette riding (winner, Robert Spopuck), and captured Vaughan from the Liberals who held the riding for 22 years (winner, Julian Fantino). The Liberals managed a surprise win of their own in Winnipeg North taking the seat from the NDP (winner, Kevin Lamoureux).More details on the by-election results can be found at www. elections.ca.
