swiftsure yachts the logbook for December 2010

the laurent giles salmo salar, originally designed for sailing the rugged North Sea, is the ultimate safe, comfortable and seaworthy cruising vessel. Built in Bris- bane, Australia in 1990, Discovery II is an extraordinary example of this pedigree. With her original owners, she cruised from Port Douglas, Australia to Indonesia, Thai- land, and the Med before crossing the Atlantic to the islands of the Caribbean. During their voyage she lived up to her reputation: occasional 170 mile days, seakindly motion, and the capacity to withstand a blow and carry the stores needed for long term cruising. The protected, safe center cockpit steering station

has many of the attributes of a motor sailor with sail controls close at hand and hydraulic assisted roller furl- ing main and electrically assisted winches for the roller furling head sails. Her powerful 84 HP Perkins 4-236 diesel engine is capable of propelling her at speeds up to eight knots, and she is well equipped with new Garmin instruments and plotter, electric head, solar panels, wind generator and self steering plus a Clear View for added visibility in bad weather. At anchor family and friends will fi nd themselves

aboard a boat with the distinctive ambience that refl ects her owner’s view of life. With helm seat converted to large cockpit table, neighboring boats will most likely catch a glimpse of candle light emanating from the enclosed cockpit as well as the quiet laughter of sailors enjoying an evening of alfresco dining. Down below, her teak interior and leather upholstery exude warmth and elegance, and all berths have wool toppers for a good night sleep. On winter sails, Discovery II remains toasty with her Scan Marine forced air heating system.
