his blues, while Pompano Pete accompanied him on the harmonica. From here south there are as many local Tiki Bars as there are buoys, each with a musical aging hippie frozen in the 60’s. However, we’ll miss most of them, and hopefully all the buoys, as we leave, well rested and fit for another two days/nights of offshore sailing. Next stop: 250 miles south to Key West.

A Boat By Any Other Name I am an avid builder of wood boats and am very


interested in the cover art of the October issue of 48° North. Do you or your staff have any ideas of what this might be called so I could obtain plans or at least a drawing of this boat. I would love to build something like this. Any help would be great.

Well David, what we thought would be a simple answer like a “gig” or “longboat,” turned out to be a bit more complicated. Having contacted a number of our wooden boat aficionados, it appears to be neither fish nor fowl. Either it was too small, the rowing positions were different, or the masts didn’t ring true, to fit official definitions. But as they say, “the answer is out there.” We’ll put this out to all the readers and see what thoughts we get.
