Morning came too soon, we woke up with severe headaches and nausea. Dan had installed a fresh air intake over our bed when we had the boat in for its repairs. It had saved our life, we had an exhaust leak in one of the generators. Not being able to turn off the generators, we had to work in the exhaust until we had it fixed. Dan spent most of the morning trying to locate the leak. He found the wireways in the engine room leading to the salon were not sealed tight enough and the exhaust was filling the galley and the salon. The exhaust came through the flooring up under our bed. We worked most of the day repairing the leak, setting up fans in each of the rooms to blow out the exhaust out. Still sick and nauseated, we pulled anchor and headed into San Diego to finish the repairs. It took us two months to get over the CO poisoning.

Once the Island Inventory project was completed, we

left the Broward after three and a half years and headed back home to North Saanich. Dan and I talked about hydrogen as a fuel and decided to use our experience as researchers and look into hydrogen technology. We were determined we would not suffer from CO poisoning again. How can we make hydrogen work without modifying the boat. Through our research we finally developed a hydrogen injection system, that is tough, water resistant and able to withstand the open sea environment. We named the system a Hydra Cat Performance System. We have engaged the University of Victoria on

Vancouver Island to test and help with the design of the control system. The Hydra Cat separates distilled or highly filtered water with the use of Potassium Hydroxide into hydrogen and oxygen molecules. The gas is fed into the air intake where it mixes the fuel, making fuel burn cleaner, reducing the CO emission.

It works with all fossil fuels or biofuels. There are no modifications to the boat, as the system is installed along the firewall. The Hydra Cat Performance System increases the fuel economy, cleans the engine, increases torque and reduces the CO emissions. Most of all it will make the boat smell clean and fresh. No more exhaust fumes as you sit on the stern fishing while the engine is idling. No more fumes being sucked into the interior of the boat. No more scrubbing the hull trying to take off the black soot. A sailor’s dream or at least mine. The sea has given us a lot fun, great adventures and

a great career. If by promoting hydrogen energy to the yachting community we can save one sailor from dying from CO Poisoning or hundreds from being sick as Dan and I were, it is worth the hard work and money we have put into our research and development.
