N O R T H W A T E R DL Wide Mouth

With its sucker-like mouth agape, North Water’s DL Wide Mouth throw bag looks like a bottom-feeding fish out of water. But that’s okay be- cause, like a fish, the Wide Mouth was born for the water. Most throw bags have a disc of floa- tation at the bottom, mean- ing the bag collapses easily after deployment. Te Wide Mouth’s floatation is sewn into the walls of the cylin- drical bag, meaning it keeps its shape even when empty. Combine that with the bag’s wide mouth, designed to scoop up water when the bag is being pulled back to shore, and you have a throw bag that comes back full of water and weighted for a second or third toss. Most bags only give you one good shot at hit- ting your target. With practice, you can toss the DL Wide Mouth three or four times per minute. Te new Spectrex is even stronger than the old Spectra

cord and the bag has loops for use with a belt. $54 polypropylene, $97 Spectrex, Cdn www.northwater.com

Bright Lights

B U S H N E L L High Performance LED Te 3-watt Luxeon diode kicks out 100 lumens, is visible up to 4.8 kilometres away and will last for 100,000 hours. Te two lithium batteries in the 15-cen- timetre aluminum light have a burn time of four hours, but one of the light’s six modes is a locked position, which means you won’t find it turned on in the bottom of your bag at the end of a sunny day. $57 Cdn • www.bushnell.com

P R I N C E T O N T E C Impact XL Princeton Tec’s one-watt LED light burns at a strength of 17 lumens, enough juice to send the beam 48 metres. Te four AA batteries contribute most of the unit’s 181-gram weight, but deliver a 50-hour burn time. Waterproof to 100 metres. $50 Cdn • www.princetontec.com

P E T Z L Tactikka XP Petzl’s Tactikka XP draws on three AAA batteries to send a clear white light up to 50 metres through the darkness. Te maximum range is reached temporarily by pressing the boost button which kicks out 50 per cent more light than the highest of three normal output settings. Te light fea- tures a battery indicator and is water resistant. Slide a clear diffuser lens across the beam for reading or a coloured lens for periodic illumination that won’t wreck your night vision. $56 US • www.petzl.com

M S R Dromedary

MSR’s water blad- ders are the newest, smallest and least mal- odorous members of the camel family. You can’t ride them through the desert like you could an Arabian camel, but then again it’s hard to retrieve water from a camel, whereas any liquid you put in an MSR Dromedary comes back fresh and untainted, thanks to the food-grade polyurethane

laminated to the inside of the Cordura nylon. 2, 4, 6 and 10 litres, $35-46 Cdn, $30-40 US www.msrcorp.com
