Tandem Cross-Bow Draw U-Turn
Use the power of the cross-bow draw to turn around in a hurry 1 2
THE TANDEM CROSS-BOW DRAW U-turn takes its name from the bow paddler’s hanging cross-bow draw. The bow pad- dler performs a cross-bow draw, at first using water resistance on the blade to start the turn and then unwinding his ro- tated torso to bring the bow around. The stern paddler puts the canoe on edge, provides bracing support and assists in the turn with a reverse sweep. Use the tandem cross-bow draw to land parallel to a lakeside ledge, catch an eddy in moving water or turn around after remembering you forgot a pack at the last portage.

While paddling forward, edge the canoe into the turn by leaning to the inside. The stern paddler sets the edge and both paddlers hold it. Initiate the turn with a quarter sweep in the bow and a reverse sweep in the stern.
Plant a cross-bow draw in the bow. The stern paddler’s hands should be low and over the water. Notice the body rotation of both paddlers.
The stern paddler rotates forward with the reverse sweep, kicking the stern away from the paddle while the bow paddler brings the bow to the blade with a cross-bow draw.
Both paddlers reach forward to follow through with power strokes; the stern paddler uses a forward stroke and the bow paddler uses a cross forward.
The bow paddler returns his blade to the onside, and both paddlers reach forward to complete the turn with forward strokes in unison.
Power off.
