2 TRUE: Douglas firs can grow to be 85 metres high.
3 FALSE: The tamarack is a conifer tree because it’s cone bearing, but its needles turn yellow and fall off in the autumn.

9 FALSE: Trees grow during the spring and summer. By looking at the stump of a tree you can see how much it grew in one season since every pair of rings represents one year of growth. The light-co- loured rings show how much the tree grew in the spring and the dark rings show the growth of the tree in the summer.

Beware of Pine Beetles!
Humans are not the only creatures consuming trees at an alarming rate. The pine beetle is de- stroying trees across Western Canada. You can spot groups of trees that are being attacked by pine beetles because their needles have dried up and turned orange—just like the leaves of deciduous trees do in the autumn. You can do your part to help stop the spread of pine beetles by not bringing your own firewood into campgrounds, so pine beetles can’t use your firewood to hitch a ride to a new area.
