GORP Raffan to Curate Canoe Museum
Acclaimed Canoeroots columnist James Raffan will have more to distract him from getting his columns in on time af- ter accepting the post of curator at the Canadian Canoe Museum in Peterbor- ough, Ontario. Raffan is the author of Summer North
of Sixty and Bark, Skin and Cedar and is a past governor of the Royal Canadian Geo- graphical Society. He will design new ex- hibits and oversee the museum’s collection of more than 600 crafts, the largest collec- tion of canoes and kayaks in the world. Raffan says his appointment is proof that
the museum, which temporarily closed four years ago, is “off life support and back as a fully functioning institution.”
Roadless Rule Reinstated
A U.S. federal court has reinstated protec- tion for roadless areas of national forests by overturning the Bush administration’s repeal of the Clinton-era Roadless Rule. In September, the court ruled that the Bush administration acted illegally in 2005 when it repealed the 2001 law. Te Roadless Rule had prohibited con-
struction of new roads in areas the U.S. Forest Service had designated as road- less. Te reinstatement returns protec- tion to more than 23 million hectares of wilderness from road-building, logging and other industrial development. Presi- dent Bush is expected to revisit the issue, as soon as he tidies up a few loose ends elsewhere.—I.M.
